A huge well done to No Limits Work Experience participant, Tom, on gaining employment after completing our Work Experience programme.
Tom joined No Limits Café in June last year as part of our Pathway Programme. Having been out of education and employment for some time Tom was keen to gain some essential employability skills and work experience. With our support Tom swiftly achieved his Level 1 Food Hygiene Certification and his Barista Certification and became a confident, fun and enthusiastic member of the No Limits team.
Pathway to Hospitality and Work Experience
After the Pathway Programme came to end we were able to extend Tom’s time with us. He continued on our Work Experience Programme supported by a 1-1 Job Coach and gained many valuable skills. Our employability skills include Team Work, Time Keeping and Customer Service and Hospitality. Tom was a great addition to the kitchen and ably assisted preparing lunches however Tom really shone when demonstrating his Barista Skills!
Growing in confidence and gaining new skills
From lacking in confidence at meeting and serving new people, Tom learnt to use the till, take food to tables, and build up relationships with the rest of the team.
Director Amanda Pugh said “We are so proud of the change in Tom’s self-confidence, he has been a joy to have on the team, he is a fantastic barista and can happily be left independently rustling up a long list of coffee orders. The employability skills he has gained will help him go far”
As his time with us neared its end after 12 months (with a few gaps for lockdown!) it was time for Tom to look for a new placement to showcase his newly gained skills and qualification. With the support of Eat That Frog who helped build Tom’s C.V, and encouragement to look into the Government Kickstart Job Offers, Tom and his newfound confidence took the leap!
Attending a Job Centre Kickstart recruitment day Tom approached MaMa’s Kitchen in Torquay, and armed with his certificates and updated C.V. Tom was offered a position there and then!
Lewis from MaMa’s Kitchen said “We are delighted to have Tom as part of our team, Tom has fitted in well so far and is becoming a valuable Mama’s team member. We look forward to having Tom with us for the duration of his employment where we will teach him to make all of our delicious desserts and ice cream sundaes!”
No Limits Café director Sarah Thorp said “ To find employment is a fantastic achievement and is a world away from when Tom started with us just over a year ago. We are all incredibly proud of him and we know he will be a positive addition to MaMa’s Kitchen”
